— Moon Tattoo

Moon Tattoo — crescents, phases, celestial fine line work.

The moon is one of the quietest motifs we tattoo — exactly because it doesn't need to explain itself. We work it strictly in fine line: clean single needles, no fills, no shading. As a single crescent on the inner wrist, as a full lunar cycle along the forearm, or as a calm celestial composition with a star and an orbit. Drawn and tattooed by Aroa at Staffelstrasse 8, Zurich Wiedikon.

What a moon tattoo means

The moon is one of the oldest symbols there is — time, cycles, the feminine principle, intuition. That openness is its strength: it carries the meaning you give it, without locking you into a single reading.

Three readings come up most often in our chair. First, the moon as a companion — a quiet shape on the wrist or collarbone that simply travels with you. Second, the moon as a marker of a transition — crescents often hold a personal before and after that only the wearer needs to know. And third, the moon as part of a celestial composition — together with stars, an orbital line, or a botanical sprig.

What matters to us: we never design a generic sticker. Before the machine runs, we talk through which phase, which size and which placement actually fits your idea — and then we draw it 1:1 onto the skin.

Moon phases as motifs

A single moon phase is a quiet statement. A row of phases — new moon, waxing crescent, full moon, waning crescent — is a sentence. Crescents, full moons and new moons all work beautifully on their own; a sequence of phases reads as a lunar cycle, which we usually place along the forearm, collarbone or spine. The moon also sits well in a celestial composition — paired with a star, an orbit, or a botanical sprig.

We'll talk size with you — it depends on the motif, the placement and what you want to express. Send your idea via WhatsApp and we'll come back with a sketch and a size suggestion before the appointment.

Custom or flash — how we tattoo moons

With a moon, the choice between flash and custom is often the most important question before the session. Both work, and both hold up in fine line.

Flash

  • · Classic crescent or full moon
  • · Pre-drawn design, bookable straight away
  • · Session planned individually
  • · Ideal for a first tattoo or as an add-on

Custom

  • · Your specific moon phase (e.g. birth moon)
  • · Combined with a date, a word or botanicals
  • · Lunar cycle across multiple phases
  • · Drawn 1:1 onto the skin before the session

Frequently asked — Moon Tattoo Zurich

What does a crescent moon tattoo mean? +

The crescent stands for transition — what was, what is coming. A waxing crescent reads as growth and beginnings; a waning crescent as release and closure. Many clients choose the phase that matches a personal turning point. We usually tattoo the crescent as a very fine line, 2–4 cm in size.

What does a full moon tattoo represent? +

The full moon is the moment of full visibility — clarity, intuition, maturity. In the fine line style we work the full moon either as a clean outlined circle with subtle crater details, or as a quiet silhouette without any fill. Both versions stay sharp over the years because there are no large saturated areas that fade.

Can the full lunar cycle be tattooed as a continuous row? +

Yes — the lunar cycle with five to eight phases is one of our most-booked moon motifs. We usually place it along the inner forearm, across the collarbone, or down the spine. Total length is typically 10–22 cm, with each phase between 1.5 and 2.5 cm. The composition is fitted exactly to your body shape before the session.

What sizes work best for a moon tattoo? +

Single moons sit beautifully between 2 and 4 cm — perfect for the inner wrist, collarbone or behind the ear. Moon cycles work from 10 cm upwards, because each phase needs to stay readable as its own shape. Under 1.5 cm, fine crater detail loses clarity, so we don't recommend going smaller.

Can a moon be combined with other motifs? +

Very often. Popular combinations: moon with stars or an orbital line (celestial), moon with a botanical sprig (moon + flower), moon with lettering underneath (a date, a single word). We design the composition as one piece — no sticker look, just a single connected motif.

How much does a moon tattoo cost in Zurich? +

Starting at CHF 150 for 30 min · Exact price after sharing your idea on WhatsApp. Includes consultation, second-skin dressing and free touch-ups.

Where on the body does a moon tattoo look especially good? +

Inner wrist, collarbone, behind the ear and the ankle for single moons — discreet, visible only when you want it to be. Inner forearm, spine and shoulder blade for moon cycles and larger compositions. In our studio we draw the motif 1:1 onto the skin before the session, so size and placement land exactly right.

Custom or flash — which works for a moon tattoo? +

Both. For classic crescents and full moons we have flash designs — quick to book, cleanly drawn. For personal stories (a specific moon phase from your birth date, a combination with text or a botanical detail) we draw a custom design. Send your idea via WhatsApp, we usually reply within 24 hours.
